Be aware and fight cancer
Causes of cancer are primarily related to life style and habits:
A diet high in fats and low in fiber increases the risk of cancer.
A diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables decreases the risk of cancer.
Smoked foods, especially smoked meats, increase the risk of cancer.
Tobacco, smoked or chewed, is the single highest risk factor for cancer.
Regular exercise decreases the risk of cancer.
Avoid x-rays and CT scans unless necessary as radiation increases the risk of cancer.
Avoid direct contact with chemicals.
Early signs of cancer are usually:
· Low grade fever
· Unexplained weight loss
· Persistent cough
· Hoarseness of voice
· Difficulty in swallowing
· Change in size of mole or wart
· Ulcers that do not heal
· Changed bowel habits
People at high risk for cancer are:
Those with a family history of cancer
Chronic and long term users of tobacco: smokers and pan chewers
Regular consumers of alcohol
Those exposed to chemicals or radiation at work
Those infected by viruses such as Hepatitis B and HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)
Organs commonly affected by cancers in India are:
- Head and neck
- Food pipe (esophagus)
Steps to prevent cancer are:
- Awareness of what causes cancer
- Regular check ups after the age of 35
- No smoking or chewing tobacco or eating pan masala
- Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in fat
- Regular exercise
