Home Based Palliative Care
CanSupport operates India’s largest home based palliative care program, and we have been doing this free of charge since 1996.
We have pioneered the model which has been replicated in various states in collaboration with State Governments. We presently have 34 teams in six states who continue to serve more than 5,000 patients and about 16,000 family caregivers through over 40,000 home visits annually.
Each of our teams comprises of multidisciplinary professionals including doctors, nurses, counsellors, and physiotherapists. It is the unique approach and impact of our program which has led to CanSupport receiving the prestigious ‘Public Health Champion’ award conferred by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
We share factual information about patient’s illness in honest understandable vernacular for the patient and their family members or caregivers to comprehend, based on which they can make informed decisions. We aim for the patients to maintain or regain physical independence and preserve their autonomy. Not just medical, but psychological, emotional, and spiritual support is provided to both patients and families. Bereavement counselling and socio-economic rehabilitative support for destitute families are other facets of the care provided.
