Releasing Pain Brought the Smile Back

For 57-year-old Virender, life was always about the open road. A lively man whose profession and deepest passion was driving to far-off places, he found his peace in the quiet beauty of nature whizzing past his windows. But his world came to a sudden, grinding halt when he was diagnosed with carcinoma of the buccal mucosa, a painful cancer of the inner cheek.

When Virender first walked into CanSupport’s Outpatient Clinic in East Delhi holding his wife’s hand, the vibrant traveller was nowhere to be seen. Though he had the blessing of a close-knit family, including two grown-up sons who stood by him as pillars of support, the sheer terror of his treatment plan and a broken spirit had completely overwhelmed him.

Virender was in agony. He reported severe physical pain, a lost appetite, and sleepless nights. But the emotional wreckage was even deeper. Well-groomed and highly articulate, he didn’t hide his turmoil; instead, he openly poured out his heart. He was trapped in a dark room of depression and negative thoughts, even admitting to occasional flashes of suicidal ideation. He was angry at the universe, constantly crying out with the agonizing question: Why me?

Our counsellors sat down with him, not just to look at his medical charts, but to listen to the outpouring of his soul. As we gently explored his thoughts and family dynamics, a crucial truth emerged: it wasn’t just the diagnosis breaking Virender but the excruciating, uncontrolled physical pain that was fuelling his psychological despair. When physical pain robs you of sleep and breath, it robs you of sanity.

The CanSupport team immediately swung into action. While his physical symptoms were medically targeted, the counsellors introduced deep relaxation techniques, giving him a safe, non-judgmental space to vent his anger and fears, helping him slowly regain an anchor of control over his own mind.

Just a few days later, Virender walked back into the clinic for his follow-up. The transformation was nothing short of a miracle.

The heavy, suffocating cloud had lifted. Virender walked through the door with a lit-up face. He reported that his negative thoughts had drastically cleared, his sleep had finally returned, and a profound sense of calm had taken over. Beside him, his wife was beaming with happiness, deeply relieved to see her husband comfortable and emotionally relaxed for the first time in months.

Virender’s journey is a beautiful, urgent reminder of what palliative care truly stands for. When severe physical pain is aggressively managed, and raw human emotions are given the dignity of being heard, the human spirit can heal remarkably fast. He may have a long road of cancer treatment ahead, but Virender is back in the driver’s seat of his own life, navigating the journey with hope, comfort, and a smile.
