Finding Strength When Life Feels Unbearable

At 43, Dinkar* was living with carcinoma of the colon and facing not only severe physical discomfort but also immense emotional and financial stress. As the primary breadwinner of his family, the diagnosis had disrupted every aspect of his life. He was receiving treatment at Sassoon Hospital and Indrayani Hospital & Cancer Institute, but as his condition progressed, he became bedridden and unable to walk independently.

Dinkar was living with his parents, brother, wife and two children. While his parents and brother remained involved in his care, his illness had also brought strain within his marriage. Following his diagnosis and worsening condition, his wife became emotionally distant and began living separately in another space with their children. This further deepened his sense of isolation at a time when he needed emotional support the most.

The financial impact of his illness added to his distress. With limited family resources and his inability to work, the costs of medicines, treatment and essential medical equipment became difficult to manage. The combination of physical dependence, financial uncertainty and changes within his family left him struggling with anxiety, low mood and persistent overthinking.

When the CanSupport team visited Dinkar, they took time to understand not only his medical needs but also the emotional and social challenges surrounding his illness. The doctor and nurse provided essential clinical care, while the counsellor offered him a safe space to express his fears, frustrations and worries. Through regular counselling and compassionate listening, the team helped him process his emotions and gradually regain a sense of emotional strength.

Recognising the practical difficulties faced by the family, CanSupport also provided essential support. The team mobilised a wheelchair to improve Dinkar’s mobility and an air mattress to enhance his comfort while bedridden. Ration support was provided to help ease some of the family’s immediate financial pressures. Dinkar and his family were also guided about relevant government welfare and health insurance schemes that could potentially support his treatment and reduce the financial burden.

With continued home visits, counselling and medical support, a gradual change became visible. Dinkar began to overthink less and developed a more positive and balanced outlook towards his circumstances. While his physical condition remained challenging, he felt better equipped to cope with the emotional burden of his illness and the uncertainties surrounding his future.

For Dinkar, CanSupport’s presence meant beyond medicines and equipment. It gave him a sense that someone was listening, understood what he was going through and was willing to stand beside him during one of the most difficult phases of his life. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the team, sharing that the emotional, medical and practical assistance had been invaluable to him and his family.

Dinkar’s journey is a reminder that living with cancer can place an enormous burden on the body, mind and family. Palliative care responds to all of these dimensions by offering comfort, dignity, emotional strength and practical support when they are needed most. For him, compassionate care helped turn a period of overwhelming distress into one where he could face each day with greater reassurance, confidence and hope.
