Finding Peace & Reclaiming Hope Amid the Storm

Until a year ago, life for this 40-year-old mother in Dehugaon was defined by vibrancy and purpose. Alongside raising her two children, Nandini* stood as an active partner to her husband, helping manage their family hotel business. However, her life took an abrupt turn when she was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive brain cancer.

After completing curative treatments at a private hospital, her care transitioned to palliative management. Fully aware of her diagnosis and prognosis, she found herself carrying a heavy emotional burden. The weight of her illness was compounded six months later by the sudden, tragic death of her mother. Trapped between grieving her mother and coping with her own advancing disease, she was consumed by persistent sadness, fear, and intrusive negative thoughts.

While her husband and children rallied around her with unconditional love and devoted caregiving, the deep emotional shock required specialized psychosocial intervention. That is when the CanSupport team stepped in; not just into their home, but also their lives.

The team established a holistic framework of support by starting with creating a safe space for grief. During initial visits, the counsellor focused on building trust, encouraging Nandini to freely express her unspoken grief over her mother’s sudden passing and her anxieties about her own health. With continued counselling, she was introduced to gentle daily mindfulness exercises which guided her to reconnect with her spiritual practices of prayer and chanting. This helped shift her focus towards the meaning moments she continues to share with her family and reframed her mindset. Additionally, the nurse provided regular education on symptom management, medication adherence, and tailored nutrition. The husband and children were guided to maintain a positive home environment and foster open communication.

Rooted in peace, the transformation was gradual yet impactful as the heavy fog of anxiety began to lift. From previously feeling overwhelmed by distress, Nandini had changed to eagerly anticipating the team’s visits for comfort and connection. She has learned to cope with her condition with great resilience and mental peace. She continues her journey wrapped in warmth, dignity, and quiet strength proving that even in the face of advanced illness, emotional healing and quality of life are always within reach.
