Restoring Comfort and Uniting a Family

When a 50-year-old mother was diagnosed with carcinoma of the cricopharynx, her medical journey initially began with hope for a cure. However, as the disease progressed despite treatment, her care shifted from curative modalities to palliative care; a pivotal transition focused on relieving suffering, managing complex symptoms, and preserving her dignity.

Behind Vasudha’s* clinical diagnosis lay a vulnerable household facing profound physical, financial, and emotional strain. While her two married daughters provided constant love and practical help from afar, the patient’s husband and son struggled to engage, leaving her without consistent daily caregiving or support during hospital visits. Compounded by severe financial hardship, the family was even struggling to afford basic nutritional necessities.

Upon learning about the family’s hardships and the interconnected challenges, the CanSupport team stepped in with a holistic plan encompassing medical, material, and psychosocial interventions.

To provide targeted medical and practical relief, the team initiated with furnishing respiratory and tracheostomy care. Addressing the worsening respiratory secretions and other complications, they provided a suction machine for home use and trained the family on its operation, significantly easing her breathing and distress. As her condition advanced, they focused towards restoring rest and positioning. Lying flat had began causing severe discomfort and insomnia to Vasudha. Following a clinical assessment, the team mobilized an adjustable backrest and this simple intervention brough immediate succour, allowing her to sleep comfortably again. Furthermore, for nutritional security, the team eased the family’s financial crisis and protected the patient’s health through arranging regular dry ration kits. This ensured that her basic nutritional needs were met without added stress.

However, addressing Vasudha’s physical symptoms was only half the battle.

The counsellor had perceived that the caregiver gap needed to be resolved. They conducted structured family meetings and counselling sessions and gently educated her husband and son on the critical nature of her illness. They also taught them essential home-care techniques and highlighted how vital their presence was for her emotional well-being. These regular interactions fostered a turning point as both her husband and son began actively participating in her daily care and accompanying her to medical appointments. This lifted a massive emotional burden from Vasudha.

With the integration of medical care, nutritional aid, and compassionate counselling, the CanSupport team had brought peace, comfort, and unity to a difficult journey, making sure Vasudha spent the precious time she has surrounded by a fully supported, active network of loved ones who were all aware and sensible of the time they must cherish.
