Reframing the “Why”: Hope Reclaimed through Love & Resilience

For years, Devesh*, an auto driver, navigated the busy streets to provide for his family. But in 2023, at 49 years of age, what began as a routine dental complaint took a devastating turn when medical evaluations revealed oral cancer. Despite undergoing active treatments, the disease progressed, requiring him to start chemotherapy, bringing with it debilitating physical side effects, severe discomfort, and forcing him to step away from the steering wheel.

Beyond the physical toll, the diagnosis triggered deep existential pain. Confronted by unpredictable symptoms, Devesh found himself spiralling into health-related anxiety, constantly asking: “Why did this happen to me when I lived an honest life?” and “Why has God done this to me?” The feeling of injustice and the struggle to find meaning in his suffering proved far heavier than the physical pain alone.

When the CanSupport team got in touch with them, they almost immediately recognized the urgent need for emotional stabilization. They initiated with targeted counselling sessions designed to address his fears, manage treatment-related stress, and reframe his perspective.

As part of the strategic psychosocial interventions, they started with creating a compassionate, non-judgmental environment for him to voice his anger, fear, and questioning, allowing him to release bottled-up distress. Guidance was provided to shift his mindset from the despair of “Why me?” toward recognizing the vital lifeline right in front of him. He was encouraged to focus on the unwavering commitment of his wife, the financial and caregiving support from his daughter, and the solidarity of his close-knit family.

To cope further, the team delivered psychoeducation on managing uncertainty, handling chemotherapy side effects, and practicing simple stress-management techniques to combat feelings of helplessness. Family connectedness was reinforced by integrating family members into counselling sessions to bolster their role as essential protective anchors for his mental well-being and treatment adherence.

These measures, and ongoing counselling, renewed a sense of purpose in Devesh. He began to process his illness with greater acceptance and resilience. By redirecting his focus towards the deep love and presence of his loved ones, the cloud of isolation and existential despair gradually started to clear.

Today, while Devesh continues his chemotherapy journey, he does so with a lighter heart and renewed strength, and the awareness that even though the disease may bring unexpected suffering, he does not have to go through the storm alone.
