Mehrosh Parveen is a lively toddler with a big smile on her face. It is her first time at the Day Care. She is accompanied by her mother, Roshan Jahan, who becomes teary-eyed as she speaks to the Day Care team. Six months ago, Mehrosh was diagnosed with blood cancer.
The emotional distress of the diagnosis has taken a toll on Roshan, whose only wish is for her youngest child to get better. Along with the countless visits to AIIMS hospital, Roshan and her husband must also manage the financial stress of commuting between their village and Delhi, finding a place to stay in the city, and running their shop back in the village. She also has two other children who stay in the village with Roshan’s parents, and it is not easy for them to see their sister sick and their parents worried.
When doctors recently told Roshan that the prognosis did not appear reassuring, Roshan says she felt her heart break. The Day Care team urged Roshan to stay strong, follow the doctors’ treatment plan, and ensure that Mehrosh is eating well.
As part of the Day Care, Mehrosh was provided with nutritional support and medications. It helps Roshan to speak to the other families at the Day Care and feel a sense of companionship. The team also suggested that she spend quality time with Mehrosh to keep her happy and active.
After attending a few sessions, Roshan appears more positive. She conveyed to the team how her heart feels lighter and expressed her gratitude for the support she received. The team continues to assure her that they will be available whenever she wishes to speak to them.
