Story of Anjali: The Power of Belief

CanSupportStories

Anjali is 50 years old and was diagnosed with cancer of the breast in 2021. A doting mother and wife, she lives with her husband, son and daughter. Her second daughter is married and settled with her family.

The financial situation of the family is stable. Anjali’s husband is a truck driver and her son recently got a job.

CanSupport got her referral from its cancer helpline. Anjali got enrolled under the Faridabad home care team in April 2021. On their first visit in the same month, the palliative care team learnt that she was bedridden and was dependent on her family for all her needs. Her physical symptoms included pain, insomnia, inability to walk and excessive weakness. The team doctor provided pain relieving medication and vitamin supplements to address her physical symptoms. The team nurse added to the care by providing nutritional supplements including protein powder, advice on a healthy diet and exercises she could do in bed, since she was bedridden. To help her further, the team provided a hospital bed for Anjali that offered great relief in achieving some mobility in bed.

The counsellor learnt from the family that the hospital where Anjali was getting treated asked them to take her home as the cancer had become incurable. Anjali had a lot of faith in God and before her sickness was diagnosed, she used to go to a lot of religious discourses with her friends. She was sad she couldn’t do that anymore. She also believed that God would cure her and she would become healthy again.

Anjali would talk to the counsellor for hours and ask him if she would be able to walk again. The team counsellor helped her regain her self confidence, encouraging her to believe that she could and was able to re ignite faith in her own self. Anjali started to believe in her ability to walk again and the miracle happened. At first, she started walking with the support of her family and in time started to walk independently with the help of a stick. Anjali was really happy that the counsellor did not give up on her and continued to encourage her to trust in the power of positive thinking and self belief.

Anjali’s family was equally relieved to see her walk again on her own. The family is really grateful to CanSupport for supporting them and Anjali to live a life of quality despite having advanced cancer.
